Modbury Kindergarten

At Modbury Kindergarten we believe that childhood is special and all children have a right to the magic of childhood – to run and jump in sunshine, to have time to think and investigate, to laugh, sing and dance, to grow, to learn, to be special, to feel loved and to have fun.

Acknowledgement of Country

We would like to acknowledge that Modbury Kindergarten has been developed on Kaurna Country and in doing so, we honour the Kaurna people as the custodians of the land and the Elders – past, present and emerging, who are the custodians of the culture, education system and philosophy upon which the Kindergarten has been founded.

About our Kindergarten

We believe that children learn through play in an environment that is safe, stimulating, secure and aesthetically pleasing. Play is fun and helps a child develop in all areas. Through play, children integrate what they are learning and stretch toward further possibilities.

While with us, each child will develop and demonstrate skills such as:

  • Independence
  • Self-confidence
  • Self-esteem
  • Problem solving skills
  • Logical thinking
  • Decision making skills
  • Curiosity
  • A love of learning
  • Respect for others and their property
  • Working in a group
  • Care for our environment

Curriculum

We use the curriculum document Being, Belonging, Becoming – Early Years Learning Framework, to plan experiences to promote the development of children’s life skills and competencies.

The Focus Areas are:

  • Children have a strong sense of identity
  • Children are connected with and contribute to their world
  • Children have a strong sense of wellbeing
  • Children are confident and involved learners
  • Children are effective communicators

In our environment children are allowed the freedom to seek out their own learning individually or with the support of their peers and adults in their play.

Learning opportunities consist of activities for the children to:

  • Make discoveries
  • Explore their own interests
  • seek answers to questions
  • test their knowledge and hypotheses
  • develop new skills and practice existing skills

At Modbury Kindergarten, we believe that literacy and numeracy is an important part of our program. We provide structured group times, with specific focus on early literacy and numeracy skills. Individual Learning Plans and Statements of Learning are provided for each child.

‘The more that you read, the more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.’ ⭐️

Our kindy community enjoyed a wonderful walk to the Tea Tree Gully Library, sharing conversations as the children noticed familiar landmarks in their local community. 🌳

At the library, we learnt how to borrow books and got a behind-the-scenes look at how books are sorted and cared for. This was followed by a session of storytelling, music and dancing. The library is truly a space for wonder, learning, and connection! 📚

The best kindy!

At Modbury Kindergarten we recognise that children with high levels of well-being and a sense of security are ready to learn and engage with others. This year our Quality Improvement Plan is going after increased wellbeing for all children in our cohort. 🌻

On Wednesday, we hosted our AGM and shared some of our research around pedagogical choices, shifts and understanding self-regulation. We look forward to continuing and growing this work with our community of learners and families. 🧠 🌱

As we prepare our kitchen garden for new plants, the children have been diving into the fascinating world of worms.🪱

Thanks to the generous support of Bunnings Modbury we have received seedlings and materials to help us create our own worm farms.

Through this hands-on provocation, the children eagerly shared their knowledge about worms:
“They wiggle and eat dirt. They have teeth and eyes.”
“They don’t like sour food like lime and lemon.”
“Worms go under the dirt and swivel around.”
“They can stay in water for a long time.”

We are excited to see the children continue to explore, nurture, and learn from the natural world around them as they take part in the cycle of growth, care, and harvest. 🌱
