Modbury Kindergarten

At Modbury Kindergarten we believe that childhood is special and all children have a right to the magic of childhood – to run and jump in sunshine, to have time to think and investigate, to laugh, sing and dance, to grow, to learn, to be special, to feel loved and to have fun.

Acknowledgement of Country

We would like to acknowledge that Modbury Kindergarten has been developed on Kaurna Country and in doing so, we honour the Kaurna people as the custodians of the land and the Elders – past, present and emerging, who are the custodians of the culture, education system and philosophy upon which the Kindergarten has been founded.

About our Kindergarten

We believe that children learn through play in an environment that is safe, stimulating, secure and aesthetically pleasing. Play is fun and helps a child develop in all areas. Through play, children integrate what they are learning and stretch toward further possibilities.

While with us, each child will develop and demonstrate skills such as:

  • Independence
  • Self-confidence
  • Self-esteem
  • Problem solving skills
  • Logical thinking
  • Decision making skills
  • Curiosity
  • A love of learning
  • Respect for others and their property
  • Working in a group
  • Care for our environment

Curriculum

We use the curriculum document Being, Belonging, Becoming – Early Years Learning Framework, to plan experiences to promote the development of children’s life skills and competencies.

The Focus Areas are:

  • Children have a strong sense of identity
  • Children are connected with and contribute to their world
  • Children have a strong sense of wellbeing
  • Children are confident and involved learners
  • Children are effective communicators

In our environment children are allowed the freedom to seek out their own learning individually or with the support of their peers and adults in their play.

Learning opportunities consist of activities for the children to:

  • Make discoveries
  • Explore their own interests
  • seek answers to questions
  • test their knowledge and hypotheses
  • develop new skills and practice existing skills

At Modbury Kindergarten, we believe that literacy and numeracy is an important part of our program. We provide structured group times, with specific focus on early literacy and numeracy skills. Individual Learning Plans and Statements of Learning are provided for each child.

This week our kindy came alive with the voices of children proudly sharing their learning with families. ‘Project Morning’ is a time for children to showcase their work, tell their stories, and invite parents and grandparents into their world of discovery. 🍃

The joy and sense of accomplishment were evident as children led their loved ones through the space, revisiting experiences, creations, and ideas that have shaped their learning. 🎨

These moments of connection remind us of the importance of relationships in a child’s journey—learning is richer when shared. 🌻

Playgroup will return in Week 2 on Thursday the 8th of May.

Also the strength of child in being able to share and articulate their learning. In our school setting we named the same, as a learning journey. Congratulations to all learners, educators, families and children.

‘Mark-making is one of the many ways in which children represent their thoughts. It is a form of thinking that precedes language. It is through the act of making marks that children discover their world, make sense of it, and learn to express themselves.’ – Vea Vecchi

From the very first days at kindy, the children’s natural curiosity and desire to communicate through mark-making has been evident.

We began an exploration around lines and mark-making, coming together to create a beautiful collaborative artwork that experimented with a range of mark-making tools and materials. Children took the lead with colour and design, making suggestions and taking inspiration from each other.

It was lovely to see the children learning from each other, reflecting on their experiences, expressing individuality, fostering a sense of ownership and excitement throughout our inquiry. 🖼️ 🎨 🖌️

‘The more that you read, the more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.’ ⭐️

Our kindy community enjoyed a wonderful walk to the Tea Tree Gully Library, sharing conversations as the children noticed familiar landmarks in their local community. 🌳

At the library, we learnt how to borrow books and got a behind-the-scenes look at how books are sorted and cared for. This was followed by a session of storytelling, music and dancing. The library is truly a space for wonder, learning, and connection! 📚
